CRCST exam requirements & cost

The Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) credential from the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) is the main entry certification for sterile processing technicians who decontaminate, inspect, assemble, package, sterilize and distribute surgical instruments and equipment. The exam is computer-based with 150 multiple-choice questions and a three-hour limit; 125 questions are scored and 25 are unscored pretest items. The content outline weights Departmental Considerations at 15%, Cleaning, Decontamination and Disinfection 21%, Preparation and Packaging 21%, Sterilization Process 21%, Sterile Storage, Transport and Distribution 9%, Patient Care Equipment and Devices 5%, and Professional Development and Management 8%. HSPA lists a US$140 certification exam fee, of which US$25 is a non-refundable application fee. To become fully certified you must also complete 400 hours of hands-on experience in a sterile processing department, which HSPA bases on its job analysis (80% of the work is hands-on in a hospital setting). The exam is graded pass/fail, and a score report showing areas for improvement is available on your dashboard the day after the exam. This portal prepares you for the written exam; it does not provide the clinical hours or a training program.
