ABO-NCLE exam requirements & cost
Straight from the certifying body — separate from what we charge for the study portal.
ABO-NCLE administers two separate basic certification exams: the National Opticianry Competency Examination (NOCE) for opticians and the Contact Lens Registry Examination (CLRE) for contact lens technicians. Eligibility for either exam requires only a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent (exceptions may apply for high school students in dual-enrollment programs); ABO-NCLE does not mandate prior training or work experience, though individual state licensing boards may impose additional requirements that supersede ABO-NCLE's own policy. Each exam costs $225 and consists of 125 multiple-choice questions (100 scored, plus unscored pretest items) with a 2-hour time limit; candidates seeking ABO certification with the practical component can instead take the combined 3-hour NOCOP exam (NOCE + ABOP) for $250. All exam fees are non-refundable.
