CRCST Pass Rate, Format & Study Guide

A real reference for anyone preparing for the Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) — HSPA exam — pass rate, retake policy, how it's scored, and a practical study timeline. This is independent reference content, not a sales page: everything below is sourced from CRCST's own certifying body.

What the CRCST exam is

The Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) credential from the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) is the main entry certification for sterile processing technicians. The exam has 150 multiple-choice questions in three hours and is followed by a 400-hour hands-on experience requirement for full certification.

Why it matters

Sterile processing departments clean, decontaminate, assemble, package and sterilize the instruments used in surgery, and hospitals typically require or prefer certified technicians. Passing the CRCST exam demonstrates the knowledge needed to protect patients from infection and to keep instrument sets safe and complete.

Who this exam is for

New and working sterile processing technicians, hospital central service staff, surgical instrument technicians and career changers entering healthcare supply and sterile processing roles.

Pass rate

The certifying body does not publicly publish an official pass rate for this exam. Be wary of third-party sites citing a specific number here — treat any pass-rate claim you see elsewhere for this exam as unverified.

If you don't pass — retake policy

If you do not pass, HSPA lets you retake the exam subject to the waiting periods and attempt limits in the Certification Handbook (revised January 2026) and you pay the exam fee again. Use the score report on your HSPA dashboard to focus your preparation before rescheduling.

How it's scored

The CRCST exam is graded pass/fail; HSPA provides a score report indicating areas needing improvement on your dashboard the day after the exam. 125 of the 150 questions are scored and 25 are unscored pretest items. HSPA does not publish an overall pass rate in the sources we reviewed, so none is quoted here; the exact passing standard is described in the Certification Handbook.

What each domain actually tests

Content-outline weights: Departmental Considerations 15%, Cleaning, Decontamination and Disinfection 21%, Preparation and Packaging 21%, Sterilization Process 21%, Sterile Storage, Transport and Distribution 9%, Patient Care Equipment and Devices 5%, Professional Development and Management 8%.

Eligibility requirements, in full

You apply through HSPA, pay the exam fee and schedule the computer-based exam. To obtain CRCST status you must also complete 400 hours of hands-on sterile processing experience; HSPA offers a six-month provisional certification while you accumulate those hours. Employers and some states add their own requirements.

What it actually costs

HSPA's Certification Handbook lists US$140 for the certification exam, including a US$25 non-refundable application fee. Training programs, textbooks and any renewal or membership fees are separate.

Keeping the credential — maintenance & recertification

CRCST certification must be renewed with continuing education credits on HSPA's schedule; see the Certification Handbook (revised January 2026) for the current renewal period and credit requirements.

How to actually prepare

Three areas carry 63% of the exam: Cleaning, Decontamination and Disinfection, Preparation and Packaging, and the Sterilization Process (21% each). Start there, then cover Departmental Considerations (15%), Sterile Storage, Transport and Distribution (9%), Professional Development and Management (8%) and Patient Care Equipment and Devices (5%). Pair your reading with hands-on time in your department, since 80% of the job is hands-on.

What's changing (2026)

HSPA revises the content outline and the Certification Handbook periodically; this guide follows the 2023 content outline and the January 2026 handbook. Check myhspa.org for current versions before you apply.
