CMAA Exam exam requirements & cost
Straight from the certifying body — separate from what we charge for the study portal.
The NHA CMAA test plan (2021 job analysis, revision of January 22, 2022) lists 110 scored questions plus 25 unscored pretest items in 135 minutes. The passing score is 390 on a 200-500 scaled score, computed from the 110 scored items. The seven domains and weights are Foundational Knowledge (9.09%), Communication and Professionalism (19.09%), Medical Law, Ethics, and Compliance (15.45%), Scheduling (14.55%), Patient Encounter (19.09%), Billing and Revenue Cycle (10%) and Medical Practice Administrative Procedures and Logistics (12.73%). The passing score is 390 on a 200-500 scaled score; a scaled score is not a percentage of correct answers, so the percent score in the portal mock is only a self-check. NHA sets the exam fee and changes it over time; confirm the current amount on the NHA site before you register. The content outline spreads questions across 7 areas; the largest are Communication and Professionalism (19.1%); Patient Encounter (19.1%); Medical Law, Ethics, and Compliance (15.4%). The full list of areas and weights is on the portal exam page. NHA lists the eligibility rules for the CMAA in its candidate handbook; check them before you register. The portal is a practice aid built on the published test plan: it is not a copy of the exam and does not predict your result.
