NREMT EMT exam requirements & cost
Straight from the certifying body — separate from what we charge for the study portal.
The NREMT EMT cognitive exam is the national written certification exam for Emergency Medical Technicians. It is a computer adaptive test: the number of items you see ranges from 70 to 120, including 10 pilot items that do not count toward your score, and the maximum time is two hours. Candidates test at a Pearson VUE test center or remotely through OnVUE. The test plan weights content as Scene Size-up and Safety 17%, Primary Assessment 42%, Secondary Assessment 7%, Patient Treatment and Transport 22% and Operations 12%. NREMT charges US$104 for each cognitive examination attempt. NREMT's published history shows first-attempt pass rates for the EMT cognitive exam in the high 60s to mid 70s percent in recent years, with 74% reported for 2024. Passing the cognitive exam is one requirement for NREMT certification together with course completion and the psychomotor requirements; many states then license or certify EMTs based on the NREMT credential. This portal prepares you for the cognitive exam; it does not replace your EMT course or hands-on skills practice.
