CPC exam requirements & cost

Straight from the certifying body — separate from what we charge for the study portal.

Eligibility
No formal experience requirement to register — current AAPC membership is required, and 2 years of coding experience is "highly recommended," not mandatory. Candidates without 2 years of experience (or an AAPC-approved training program) who pass are certified as CPC-Apprentice (CPC-A) until they later document the required experience
Real exam cost
$425 (1 attempt) or $499 (2-attempt bundle) standard; $400/$475 for students — plus a separate annual AAPC membership fee (required to test; exact current amount not independently confirmed)
Format
100 questions · 240 minutes · open-book (current or prior-year CPT/ICD-10-CM/HCPCS Level II codebooks permitted)

The Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam is administered by AAPC and has no formal experience requirement to register — only current AAPC membership is required, though 2 years of medical coding experience is highly recommended since the exam is written with that experience level in mind. Candidates without that experience (or an AAPC-approved training program) can still sit the exam and, if they pass, are certified as CPC-Apprentice (CPC-A) — the "A" is removed once the required experience or education is later documented. The exam costs $425 for a single attempt or $499 for a 2-attempt bundle (discounted student pricing is $400/$475), on top of a separate annual AAPC membership fee required to test. It's open-book — current or prior-year CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS Level II codebooks are permitted (tabbing and highlighting allowed, no loose inserts), with a choice of eBook or print format selected at voucher purchase — and can be taken via live remote online proctoring or at an in-person testing center. The exam itself is 100 questions over 240 minutes, spanning 17 real, evenly-weighted domains covering medical terminology, evaluation & management, anesthesia, every major surgical subspecialty, radiology, pathology, general medicine, and both major coding systems (ICD-10-CM and HCPCS Level II).
