The Certified in Healthcare Privacy and Security (CHPS) exam is administered by AHIMA (the American Health Information Management Association), under the oversight of CCHIIM (the Commission on Certification for Health Informatics and Information Management). Eligibility runs six separate education-plus-experience paths, all requiring the underlying experience to be specifically in healthcare privacy or security work, not generic IT security or general compliance: a high school diploma or GED plus 6 years of qualifying experience; an associate's degree in a relevant field plus 4 years; a CCA, CCS, CCS-P, or RHIT credential plus 4 years; a bachelor's degree in a relevant field plus 2 years; an RHIA credential plus 2 years; or a master's degree or higher (including a JD, MD, or PhD in a relevant field) plus 1 year. The exam fee is $259 for AHIMA members and $329 for non-members, and a retake costs the same as the initial exam. On exam day, candidates get 3.5 hours for 150 multiple-choice-style questions, of which only 125 are scored — the other 25 are unscored pretest items mixed in undetectably — spread across four domains AHIMA's own content outline weights at 23-27% each: the ethical/legal/regulatory environment, program management, IT/physical safeguards, and investigation/compliance/enforcement.
