The Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) exam is administered by the National Association of Healthcare Access Management (NAHAM), and targets front-line patient access staff. Eligibility runs several paths: at least 1 year of practical work experience in the healthcare or finance industry; completion of an accredited college program in healthcare (which bypasses the experience requirement); a high school diploma or GED plus 30 NAHAM-approved professional development contact hours earned within the past 2 years; or an associate's or bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in healthcare, business, or a related field. The exam fee is $220 for NAHAM members and $250 for non-members, submitted through NAHAM's Certification Central online application — after approval (7-10 business days), candidates have 90 days to schedule and sit the exam via PSI or Prometric. On exam day, candidates get 2 hours for 115 multiple-choice questions spanning 3 weighted domains per NAHAM's own Study Guide: Patient Access Foundations (44% — covering Customer Experience, Regulatory Compliance, Revenue Cycle, Information Systems, and Resource Management as its sub-topics), Pre-arrival (31%), and Arrival (25%). Results are calculated using a scaled score method with a minimum of 600 needed to pass. The CHAA credential runs on a 2-year cycle, renewing every June regardless of when it was earned.
