ASWB Masters exam requirements & cost
Straight from the certifying body — separate from what we charge for the study portal.
The ASWB Masters examination has 122 multiple-choice questions for exams taken from August 3, 2026: 110 are scored and 12 are unscored pretest questions (ASWB Examination Guidebook, 2026). The exam is delivered in two timed sections of 61 questions each, with 4 hours in total, and results are reported as pass or fail. The content outline has three areas: Values and Ethics (35%), Assessment and Planning (33%) and Intervention and Practice (32%). ASWB reports pass or fail only, and the number of correct answers needed depends on the exam form, so there is no single fixed passing score to quote. The portal shows a percentage only as a self-check. The ASWB fee for the Masters exam is $230 (ASWB exam page, October 2026). Your licensing board charges its own application fee on top, and state fees differ. The content outline spreads questions across 3 areas; the largest are Values and Ethics (35.0%); Assessment and Planning (33.0%); Intervention and Practice (32.0%). The full list of areas and weights is on the portal exam page. Your social work licensing board approves you to test; ASWB does not set eligibility, and requirements differ by state or province.
