Abdomen (AB) Examination — American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)
The ARDMS Abdomen (AB) exam is the specialty examination for sonographers who scan the abdomen. It covers anatomy and function, pathology, abdominal physics and clinical care, and it sits alongside the SPI exam on the way to an ARDMS credential. SummitCert's portal gives you explained practice questions, flashcards, a timed 165-question mock, a glossary and progress tracking by content area.

ARDMS AB Exam exam requirements & cost
Straight from the certifying body — separate from what we charge for the study portal.
The Inteleos page for the AB exam describes about 165 questions over three hours, made up of multiple-choice and hotspot (mark directly on an image) questions, followed by a five-minute survey. The ARDMS AB content outline (version 24.1, in force for exams delivered before May 13, 2027) has four areas: Anatomy, Perfusion, and Function (30%); Pathology, Vascular Abnormalities, Trauma, and Postoperative Anatomy (42%); Abdominal Physics (8%); and Clinical Care, Practice, and Quality Assurance (20%). The exam is scored on a 300-700 scale and the passing score is 555; the scaled score is not a percentage of correct answers. The AB exam costs US$300 on the Inteleos exam page, and you must pass both the AB and SPI exams within five years of each other, in either order. ARDMS reports a scaled score from 300 to 700 and the passing score is 555. A scaled score is not a percentage of correct answers, so the percent score in the portal mock is only a self-check. The Inteleos page lists the AB exam at US$300. Fees can change, so confirm the current amount on the Inteleos site before you apply. The content outline spreads questions across 4 areas; the largest are Pathology, Vascular Abnormalities, Trauma, and Postoperative Anatomy (42.0%); Anatomy, Perfusion, and Function (30.0%); Clinical Care, Practice, and Quality Assurance (20.0%). The full list of areas and weights is on the portal exam page. ARDMS sets the prerequisites for each specialty exam and expects the Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) exam within five years of the AB exam; confirm them on the Inteleos site before you apply. The portal is a practice aid built on the published content outline: it is not a copy of the exam, it does not simulate hotspot questions, and it does not predict your score.
