The ITIL Foundation (Version 5) exam is administered by PeopleCert on behalf of the ITIL framework's current owner. There are no formal prerequisites — Foundation level requires no prior ITIL certification, and unlike PeopleCert's higher-level ITIL modules (which mandate accredited training), Foundation can be self-studied. PeopleCert's own official exam bundle (eBook, exam voucher, and Learning Resource Kit) is priced at $536 directly from PeopleCert; standalone voucher-only pricing through resellers varies considerably by region, commonly reported between $314 and $600, so there's no single fixed number outside PeopleCert's own bundle price. The exam itself is 40 closed-book multiple-choice questions over 60 minutes, taken as a web-based remote-proctored exam with a choice of exam languages, with a 65% (26 of 40) passing score. ITIL Version 5 launched globally with Foundation in February 2026 — a real, substantive successor to ITIL 4, not a renaming, with an expanded eight-activity lifecycle model, an added AI-governance dimension, and new Complexity Thinking and Industry 5.0 human-centricity content. Content spans seven domains, most heavily the ITIL Value System (40%) and key terms/definitions (30%).
