CIA Part 1 exam requirements & cost
Straight from the certifying body — separate from what we charge for the study portal.
To pursue the CIA Part 1 exam, candidates must meet The IIA's education and experience requirements: a bachelor's degree plus 2 years of internal audit experience, a master's degree plus 1 year of experience, or 5 years of internal audit experience for active IAP holders without a qualifying degree. Candidates must also submit a character reference from a supervisor, professor, or IIA-certified individual, evaluated against The IIA's Code of Ethics. As of 2026, Part 1 costs $310 for IIA members and $445 for non-members, in addition to a one-time program application fee of $120 (members) or $240 (non-members). Once accepted into the CIA program, candidates have three years to complete all certification requirements, and each exam registration provides a 180-day window to sit for that part.
