Property & Casualty Insurance License (General Knowledge) exam requirements & cost

Straight from the certifying body — separate from what we charge for the study portal.

Eligibility
Set by each state insurance department: typically a licence application, any required pre-licensing education, and passing the state's general and state-law examinations (Texas and Illinois used as worked examples)
Real exam cost
Set by the state — for example Texas General Lines Property & Casualty $49 (Pearson VUE handbook, October 2024); Illinois $92 per exam, including a $50 state administrative fee
Format
General-knowledge section of the state exam · Texas Property & Casualty outline: 100 scored + 10 pretest questions (plus a 30 + 5 state-law section) · Texas combined exam time 150 minutes · computer-based at Pearson VUE · scaled pass mark 70

There is no single national property and casualty licensing exam. Each US state insurance department decides who may sit for a property and casualty producer licence, what pre-licensing education is required, what the exam costs and how it is passed, and Pearson VUE delivers the exams for many states. Most state exams have two parts: a general section on insurance product knowledge, and a state section on that state's insurance laws, rules and regulations. This portal covers the general product-knowledge content (property and casualty policy types, insurance terms and concepts, policy provisions and contract law), which is the content in Pearson VUE's published general-knowledge outlines. As worked examples of state rules: Texas lists the General Lines Property & Casualty exam at 150 minutes and $49 in Pearson VUE's October 2024 handbook, and its September 2026 content outline gives the general knowledge portion as 100 scoreable questions plus 10 pretest questions and the Texas-law portion as 30 scoreable plus 5 pretest. Illinois charges $92 per exam, which includes a $50 state administrative fee, and splits the exam into separate Property and Casualty general and state exams that must both be passed within 90 days. Always confirm the fee, time limit and steps with your own state insurance department and Pearson VUE.

Common questions

No. Each US state insurance department sets its own licensing requirements, and exams are delivered by Pearson VUE for many states. Most state exams combine a general section on insurance product knowledge with a state section on that state's insurance laws. This portal covers the general product-knowledge content; you still need to study your own state's law section and confirm the rules with your state insurance department.
