Master Electrician (2023 NEC) exam requirements & cost
Straight from the certifying body — separate from what we charge for the study portal.
The ICC R16 Master Electrician exam is part of the International Code Council's National Contractor/Trades examination program. ICC states plainly that it is not a licensing agency: if you want to be licensed in a city, county or state that participates, that jurisdiction requires you to pass the exam and then sets its own further requirements, such as work experience and the application process, so you must contact your jurisdiction to learn what applies to you. The exam is administered by Pearson VUE: you create an account at pearsonvue.com/ICC, schedule the exam, choose a test center and can purchase vouchers or request testing accommodations there. ICC's June 30, 2026 bulletin lists the R16 Master Electrician fee as $120 through Pearson VUE. The exam is open book with a 5-hour time limit and 100 multiple-choice questions based on the 2023 National Electrical Code (NEC) and 2021 International Codes, with Ugly's Electrical References (any edition) as the second approved reference.
