CSLB Law and Business exam requirements & cost
Straight from the certifying body — separate from what we charge for the study portal.
The Law and Business exam is one of two exams the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) requires to be licensed as a contractor in California — the other being a trade/classification-specific exam. There's no standalone eligibility requirement to sit this exam beyond having an accepted original contractor license application; from the date that application is accepted, candidates have 18 months to pass both required exams before the application expires and has to be resubmitted with new fees. The non-refundable $450 application processing fee covers the first sitting of both exams — there's no separate first-time exam fee on top of it. On exam day, candidates get 3.5 hours for a closed-book, computer-based multiple-choice exam (no notes or reference materials allowed) — CSLB doesn't publish the exact number of scored questions, but third-party sources consistently put it around 115. The exam covers seven weighted domains, from Contract Requirements and Execution (21%, the heaviest) and Employment Requirements (20%) down to Public Works (5%, the lightest). Results are provided immediately at the test center; a passing report doesn't show your overall score, while a failing report shows your overall score and a breakdown by section. CSLB doesn't publish a fixed passing percentage — the cut score is set per exam form using the Angoff method, which is why third-party estimates of the exact passing score (commonly cited around 72%) vary and aren't officially confirmed.
