FE Mechanical exam requirements & cost
Straight from the certifying body — separate from what we charge for the study portal.
Like FE Civil, the FE Mechanical exam requires no professional work experience — NCEES designed the FE exam for recent graduates and students close to finishing an undergraduate engineering degree from an EAC/ABET-accredited program, making it the entry-level step toward eventual PE licensure rather than a standalone practice credential. The exam fee is $225, payable directly to NCEES (separate from any state board fees, which don't apply until the later PE stage). The computer-based exam consists of 110 questions covering the full mechanical-engineering breadth — statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, mechanical design, materials, and controls, among others — administered at NCEES-approved Pearson VUE test centers year-round. Total appointment time is 6 hours: an 8-minute tutorial, 5 hours and 20 minutes of actual exam time, and a scheduled 25-minute break. Examinees get one attempt per testing window and no more than three attempts in any 12-month period.
Real pass rate, retake policy, scoring, and a study timeline for FE Mechanical — free, no purchase required.
