FE Civil exam requirements & cost
Straight from the certifying body — separate from what we charge for the study portal.
Unlike the PE exam, the FE Civil exam requires no professional work experience — NCEES designed it for recent graduates and students who are close to finishing an undergraduate engineering degree from an EAC/ABET-accredited program, making it the entry-level step toward eventual PE licensure rather than a standalone practice credential. The exam fee is $225, payable directly to NCEES (separate from any state board fees, which don't apply until the later PE stage). The computer-based exam consists of 110 questions covering civil engineering breadth topics plus your chosen depth module (Construction, Geotechnical, Structural, Transportation, or Water Resources & Environmental), administered at NCEES-approved Pearson VUE test centers year-round. Total appointment time is 6 hours: an 8-minute tutorial, 5 hours and 20 minutes of actual exam time, and a scheduled 25-minute break. Examinees get one attempt per testing window and no more than three attempts in any 12-month period.
Real pass rate, retake policy, scoring, and a study timeline for FE Civil — free, no purchase required.
