National Esthetics Theory Examination — National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC)

The NIC National Esthetics Theory Examination is the written part of esthetician licensure in most states, covering scientific concepts such as infection control, skin anatomy and physiology, skin disorders and basic chemistry, along with skin care services, client consultation and facial procedures. Passing it, usually alongside a practical exam, is required to work as a licensed esthetician. SummitCert's portal helps you prepare with exam-style questions and explanations, flashcards, video lessons and a timed mock exam.

The National Esthetics Theory Examination is a licensure examination for estheticians developed by the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC) and used by state boards as part of licensure. NIC's bulletin states that the exam contains 110 items, of which 100 are weighted and contribute to your final score, with 90 minutes allowed. Eligibility, fees and retake rules are set by your state board, not by NIC. Virginia is a worked example: its Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation contracts PSI to deliver the exam, requires you to pass both the NIC theory and practical examinations within one year of your first exam, accepts completion of an approved esthetics program or 600 hours of substantially equivalent training, charges $86 for the theory exam and $86 for each retake, and adds 10 Virginia state-law questions to the theory exam. Confirm your own state's hours, fees and extra requirements with your state board before you register.
