National Cosmetology Theory Exam exam requirements & cost

Straight from the certifying body — separate from what we charge for the study portal.

Eligibility
Completion of a state-approved cosmetology training program (commonly 1,000-1,600 hours depending on state — e.g. 1,000 hrs in NY/MA, 1,500 hrs in most states including Virginia, 1,600+ in AZ/CO/WI), or an approved apprenticeship/out-of-state-program pathway, plus a state licensure application — exact requirements are set by each state board, not nationally
Real exam cost
Varies by state (charged by the state board or PSI, not NIC directly) — real theory-exam fees found range roughly $25-$190 (e.g. VA $86, KY $85, MD $47, CA $125, TX $55, LA $25, PA $186 combined written+practical)
Format
110 questions (100 scored + 10 unscored pilot items) · 90-minute time limit

The National Cosmetology Theory Examination is administered by the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC) and used by most US states as part of cosmetology licensure. Eligibility is set state-by-state, but the common pattern is completing a state-approved cosmetology training program — commonly 1,000 to 1,600 hours of instruction depending on the state — then submitting a licensure application to your state board. Exam cost is also state-set rather than a single national fee: real theory-exam fees range roughly from $25 to $190 across the states checked directly, with most theory-only fees clustering around $50-$90. The exam itself is 110 multiple-choice questions (100 scored plus 10 unscored pilot items you can't distinguish from the scored ones) over a 90-minute appointment, covering four weighted domains per NIC's own current Theory Examination CIB (Eff. 7/1/2022): Hair Care and Services (45%), Scientific Concepts (35%), Skin Care and Services (10%), and Nail Care and Services (10%). Most states also require a separate hands-on Practical Examination — a different exam with its own, differently-weighted content outline — in addition to this theory exam before licensure.

Common questions

The core NIC content and 110-question/90-minute format are standardized nationally, but several states add their own state-law questions on top of the NIC content, and eligibility hours, exam fees, and retake rules are all set by each individual state board — always confirm your specific state's requirements before you apply.
