TOEFL iBT Pass Rate, Format & Study Guide
A real reference for anyone preparing for the TOEFL iBT - Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking — Educational Testing Service (ETS) exam — pass rate, retake policy, how it's scored, and a practical study timeline. This is independent reference content, not a sales page: everything below is sourced from TOEFL iBT's own certifying body.
What the TOEFL iBT exam is
The TOEFL iBT since 21 January 2026 has four sections: Reading (50 items, about 30 minutes), Listening (47 items, about 29 minutes), Writing (12 items, about 23 minutes) and Speaking (11 items, about 8 minutes); Reading and Listening are adaptive (ETS). You receive four section scores and an overall score on a 1 to 6 scale in half-point steps; for a two-year transition period a comparable overall score on the 0 to 120 scale is also reported. This portal is a study aid: its 67-question practice set is objective and cannot mark Writing or Speaking.
Why it matters
Many universities accept TOEFL iBT scores as proof of English for admission, and some professional bodies accept them for registration.
Who this exam is for
Students applying to English-language universities and professionals who need to show English proficiency, including candidates improving a previous score.
Pass rate
The certifying body does not publicly publish an official pass rate for this exam. Be wary of third-party sites citing a specific number here — treat any pass-rate claim you see elsewhere for this exam as unverified.
If you don't pass — retake policy
The ETS page we read does not state how often you may retake the test or how long scores stay valid; check your ETS account and the institution requesting your score.
How it's scored
The TOEFL iBT has no pass or fail: you receive four section scores and an overall score on a 1 to 6 scale, and each institution sets the score it requires. During a two-year transition period a comparable 0 to 120 overall score is also shown. Format: four sections taking about two hours; Reading and Listening adapt to your answers. No official pass rate is available for this exam, so none is quoted here.
