Real exam cost
$419 (PayrollOrg member) or $609 (non-member) for the 2026 US exam; international/other pricing varies
Format
190 questions (25 unscored) · 4-hour time limit · OnVUE online proctoring (North America) or a PayrollOrg Learning Center

The Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) credential is issued by PayrollOrg (renamed from the American Payroll Association), the primary professional body for US payroll practitioners. Candidates must meet one of three eligibility routes: 3 years of payroll practice within the preceding 5 years across roles like production, reporting, accounting, systems, taxation, administration, or education/consulting; 24+ months of current payroll employment plus specified PayrollOrg coursework completed within the last 24 months; or 18+ months of current payroll employment plus the FPC (Fundamental Payroll Certification) already earned plus specified coursework within the last 18 months. The 2026 US exam fee is $419 for PayrollOrg members or $609 for non-members (members save roughly 30% off the non-member rate); pricing varies for international candidates and other special circumstances. The exam itself is 190 multiple-choice questions over a 4-hour time limit, of which 25 are unscored pretest items. North America residents can test from home or office via PearsonVUE's OnVUE online proctoring, or in person at a PayrollOrg Learning Center in Las Vegas. Content is organized into 7 weighted domains under the outline effective September 5, 2026: Core Payroll Concepts (24%), Calculation of the Paycheck (22%), Compliance/Research and Resources (14%), Payroll Process and Supporting Systems and Administration (14%), Payroll Administration and Management (10%), Audits (8%), and Accounting (8%). If a candidate fails, PayrollOrg limits retesting to once per testing window (spring and fall) unless additional Payroll 201 Certificate Program training is completed at the Las Vegas Learning Center. The credential is valid for 5 full calendar years, renewed via 120 continuing-education recertification credit hours (RCHs) over that period or by retaking and passing the exam in the final year of the recertification window.
