CPO Certification Pass Rate, Format & Study Guide
A real reference for anyone preparing for the Certified Pool & Spa Operator (CPO) Certification — PHTA exam — pass rate, retake policy, how it's scored, and a practical study timeline. This is independent reference content, not a sales page: everything below is sourced from CPO Certification's own certifying body.
What the CPO Certification exam is
The CPO certification needs successful completion of the CPO course and a passing result on the CPO exam, and no industry experience is required (PHTA CPO page). The course is a 16-hour, two-day classroom program, or a blended format with the online CPO Fusion course plus a one-day in-person class; it is also available virtually where approved (PHTA CPO page). PHTA's in-person course listing describes two days of instruction with a 50-question open book exam, and the certification is valid for five years.
Why it matters
Many pool and spa operators take the CPO course because it covers water chemistry, filtration, disinfection and safety in one program; check your local health rules for any requirement.
Who this exam is for
Pool and spa operators, service technicians, facility managers and lifeguard supervisors.
Pass rate
The certifying body does not publicly publish an official pass rate for this exam. Be wary of third-party sites citing a specific number here — treat any pass-rate claim you see elsewhere for this exam as unverified.
If you don't pass — retake policy
The PHTA CPO pages do not state a retake policy. Ask PHTA or your course provider what happens if you do not pass.
How it's scored
PHTA does not publish a passing score for the CPO exam on its course pages, so the portal mock shows 75 percent only as a self-check; confirm the current requirement with PHTA or your instructor. Format: a 50-question open book exam at the end of a 16-hour course. No official pass rate is available for this exam, so none is quoted here.
