What each domain actually tests
Per BCSP's own published exam breakdown, CHST content spans four domains. Hazard and Risk Identification and Control (36.6% of the exam, by far the largest domain) covers the core work of identifying construction-site hazards and implementing controls to mitigate them. Safety Program Development, Implementation, and Sustainment (22.5%) covers building and maintaining an effective ongoing site safety program rather than one-off hazard fixes. Leadership, Communication, and Training (21%) covers the people-management side of construction safety — training workers, communicating safety requirements, and leading a safety-conscious site culture. Emergency Preparedness, Incident Investigation, and Response (19.9%, the smallest domain but still nearly a fifth of the exam) covers responding to and investigating incidents when they do occur. Eligibility requirements, in full
Candidates need three years of experience in construction safety, with at least 35% of their job duties requiring technical skill and knowledge specifically in safety, health, and environment (SH&E) work — meaning general construction experience alone, without a genuine safety-focused component to the role, doesn't satisfy this requirement. Once an application is approved, candidates have one year to sit for any purchased exam authorization, so timing an application relative to when a candidate actually intends to test matters for making full use of that one-year window.
What it actually costs
BCSP charges a $140 application fee plus a $300 examination fee — both non-refundable per BCSP's own published fee schedule — though a $550 exam / $676 combined bundle rate is also offered as an alternative to paying the two fees separately. If a candidate doesn't pass, BCSP requires at least a 6-week wait from the last attempt before retesting, and a new exam authorization (another full $300) must be purchased for the retake — the application fee isn't required again for a retake within the same original application approval, but the exam fee itself is.
Keeping the credential — maintenance & recertification
BCSP recertification cycles normally run five years, starting July 1 and ending June 30 of the fifth year, requiring certificants to achieve a designated number of recertification points through various qualifying activity categories, submitted via an online worksheet. CHST specifically requires 20 recertification points (equivalent to 200 hours of qualifying activity) per five-year cycle — a real, meaningfully lower bar than BCSP's higher-level credentials (CSP, SMP, ASP), which require 25 points (250 hours) over the same period. At least 0.5 points (5 hours) of CHST's 20-point total must specifically be in Ethics content, a requirement applied uniformly across all BCSP credential holders regardless of which specific credential they hold. How to actually prepare
