Free Wastewater Treatment Operator Class I Exam Flashcards

Bar screens remove large debris, rags, and solids from the influent stream before it reaches downstream pumps, grit equipment, and process tanks. Without screening, rags and debris wrap around pump impellers and clog valves and pipe fittings, causing exactly the premature pump failures observed. Screening is therefore not a cosmetic step but the first line of mechanical protection for every piece of equipment downstream, and its absence shows up as recurring, hard-to-diagnose equipment wear rather than an obvious single failure.
