VA-BC Pass Rate, Format & Study Guide

VACC's own results page reports an 82% pass rate for the December 2025 VA-BC exam window (449 of the tested clinicians passed).

You can't retake in the same testing window — VACC requires a new application for the next regularly scheduled exam cycle (windows run twice a year, December and June, with early-registration deadlines in September and March). There's no cap on total retakes, but three consecutive failed attempts trigger a mandatory minimum one-year wait before trying again (waived if those three fails are spread across more than three years). Each retake needs a full new application and fee — no discounted retest rate is published.

VA-BC uses a scaled score ranging from 30 to 140, with 90 required to pass. VACC is explicit that this scaled score is neither your raw number correct nor your percentage correct — it's calibrated to account for difficulty differences between exam forms. Candidates who fail receive their scaled score plus a content-area diagnostic breakdown to target further study before retesting.

VACC doesn't publish a domain-weighting breakdown for VA-BC the way some other boards do, so treat the content outline's categories as roughly equal-priority rather than betting your prep time on one area. With 125 scored questions in 2.5 hours (a comfortable ~72 seconds/question pace) plus separate un-timed 15-minute tutorial and survey blocks that don't count against you, spend your final practice sessions on timed question sets so the pacing itself becomes automatic — the exam's generosity on time is easy to squander without a plan.
