SQE1 is the first stage of the Solicitors Qualifying Examination set by the Solicitors Regulation Authority: two papers, FLK1 and FLK2, of single-best-answer questions with five options, closed book and computer-based at Pearson VUE. SQE1 exam requirements & cost

SQE1 assesses Functioning Legal Knowledge in two papers, FLK1 and FLK2, made up of single-best-answer questions with five options, closed book and computer-based (SQE1 assessment specification applicable from 1 September 2026). Each paper has its own pass mark, set by the Assessment Board after the sitting using standard-setting and equating, and you must pass both papers. This portal's 340-question mock combines FLK1 and FLK2 in one practice set; on exam day they are separate papers sat in separate sessions. FLK1 and FLK2 each have a pass mark set after the sitting with a modified Angoff method and equating; pass marks are not published in advance, and you must pass both papers. The SRA has set the SQE1 fee at £2,006 for candidates booking from October 2026 (it was £1,934 in 2025/26). There are no formal entry requirements to sit SQE1; to qualify as a solicitor you also need a degree or equivalent, SQE2, qualifying work experience and the SRA character and suitability requirements.
