SIE Exam Pass Rate, Format & Study Guide
A real reference for anyone preparing for the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) Exam — FINRA exam — pass rate, retake policy, how it's scored, and a practical study timeline. This is independent reference content, not a sales page: everything below is sourced from SIE Exam's own certifying body.
What the SIE Exam exam is
The SIE has 75 multiple-choice questions and you have 1 hour and 45 minutes; FINRA lists a passing score of 70 (FINRA SIE exam page). The FINRA content outline weights four areas: Knowledge of Capital Markets 16% (12 questions), Understanding Products and Their Risks 44% (33 questions), Understanding Trading, Customer Accounts and Prohibited Activities 31% (23 questions) and Overview of the Regulatory Framework 9% (7 questions). The exam is open to anyone aged 18 or older, no firm association is required, and you can test at a Prometric test center or online; FINRA states that results are valid for four years.
Why it matters
Passing the SIE alone does not qualify you for registration; registration also needs a qualification exam suited to your business, such as the Series 7, and association with a member firm.
Who this exam is for
Anyone starting a career in the securities industry, including students and career changers who want to take the entry exam before a firm sponsors them.
Pass rate
The certifying body does not publicly publish an official pass rate for this exam. Be wary of third-party sites citing a specific number here — treat any pass-rate claim you see elsewhere for this exam as unverified.
If you don't pass — retake policy
FINRA's SIE page lists waiting periods of 30 days after the first and second unsuccessful attempts and 180 days after the third; from January 19, 2027 these change to 15 days after the first and second attempts and 60 days after the third. Check FINRA before you rebook.
How it's scored
FINRA lists a passing score of 70 but does not say whether that is a percentage of questions or a scaled score, so the portal mock shows 70 percent only as a self-check. Format: 75 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour and 45 minutes. No official pass rate is available for this exam, so none is quoted here.
