RHIT Exam Pass Rate, Format & Study Guide

A real reference for anyone preparing for the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) Exam — American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) exam — pass rate, retake policy, how it's scored, and a practical study timeline. This is independent reference content, not a sales page: everything below is sourced from RHIT Exam's own certifying body.

What the RHIT Exam exam is

The AHIMA RHIT page describes 150 questions, of which 130 are scored and 20 are unscored pretest items mixed in, in 3 hours and 30 minutes. The RHIT content outline (effective October 1, 2022) has six domains: Data Content, Structure, and Information Governance (22%); Access, Disclosure, Privacy, and Security (16%); Data Analytics and Use (15%); Revenue Cycle Management (22%); Compliance (15%); and Leadership (10%). AHIMA reports a scaled score and the passing score is 300; it does not publish how answers convert to the scaled score. The AHIMA page lists the exam fee as US$229 for members and US$299 for non-members, and says you must schedule the exam with Pearson VUE within 120 days of becoming eligible.

Why it matters

The RHIT is AHIMA's credential for health information technicians, and employers in health information management commonly look for it.

Pass rate

The certifying body does not publicly publish an official pass rate for this exam. Be wary of third-party sites citing a specific number here — treat any pass-rate claim you see elsewhere for this exam as unverified.

If you don't pass — retake policy

The AHIMA page says a retake needs a new application with the exam fee and a 30-day wait before the application is approved; AHIMA cannot waive the retest period.

How it's scored

AHIMA reports a scaled score and the passing score is 300. It does not publish how answers convert to that score, so the percent score in the portal mock is only a self-check. Format: 150 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours 30 minutes (130 scored, 20 unscored); the portal mock uses 150 questions in 210 minutes and counts them all. No official pass rate is available for this exam, so none is quoted here.
