RBT Exam Pass Rate, Format & Study Guide
A real reference for anyone preparing for the Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) Certification Examination (BACB) exam — pass rate, retake policy, how it's scored, and a practical study timeline. This is independent reference content, not a sales page: everything below is sourced from RBT Exam's own certifying body.
What the RBT Exam exam is
The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certification is the BACB's entry-level credential for people who implement behavior-analytic services under supervision. The written exam has 85 multiple-choice questions (75 scored) in 90 minutes and follows the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd edition).
Why it matters
Employers and payers in autism and behavioral health services commonly require or prefer the RBT credential for direct-service staff. Certification shows that you completed the 40-hour training, were assessed on core skills and passed a standardized exam.
Who this exam is for
Aspiring behavior technicians, paraprofessionals and therapy assistants who work with a BACB-certified supervisor, and applicants who have already completed the 40-hour training and the Initial Competency Assessment.
Pass rate
The BACB's RBT pass-rate page (updated May 2026) shows a first-time pass rate of about 79% and a retake pass rate of about 46% (figures taken from a search extract of the page; the full table also reports results by 40-hour training provider).
If you don't pass — retake policy
If you do not pass, you may retake the exam up to the limits in the BACB's RBT Handbook (the BACB limits the number of attempts within an application's authorization period) and pay the US$45 exam appointment fee again. Retakers pass at a much lower rate than first-time test takers, so read the handbook's retake rules and review the Ethics and Behavior Acquisition areas before rebooking.
How it's scored
The RBT exam is scored pass/fail. Of the 85 questions, 75 are scored and 10 are unscored pilot questions that you cannot tell apart, so answer every question. The BACB reports results as pass or fail rather than percentages.
Format at a glance
The exam contains 85 multiple-choice questions, of which 75 are scored and 10 are unscored pilot items. You have 90 minutes. The result is pass or fail and the exam is delivered by Pearson VUE.

What each domain actually tests
Test content outline weights: Data Collection and Graphing 17%, Behavior Assessment 11%, Behavior Acquisition 25%, Behavior Reduction 19%, Documentation and Reporting 13% and Ethics 15%. Questions are typically scenario-based, so practise applying the terms rather than just defining them.
Eligibility requirements, in full
The BACB requires applicants to be at least 18, hold a high school diploma or equivalent, complete the 40-hour training, pass a background check and complete the Initial Competency Assessment within 90 days before applying. After approval you schedule the exam with Pearson VUE within your authorization period. Check the current handbook for details.
What it actually costs
The BACB's certification application processing fee is US$65 for applications on or after January 1, 2026, and the Pearson VUE exam appointment costs US$45. Training programs, supervision and the competency assessment may carry separate fees from your employer or training provider.
Keeping the credential — maintenance & recertification
RBT certification must be renewed annually: you complete a renewal competency assessment, maintain ongoing supervision and meet other requirements in the BACB's RBT Handbook.
How to actually prepare
Behavior Acquisition (25%) and Behavior Reduction (19%) are the largest content areas, followed by Data Collection and Graphing (17%), Ethics (15%), Documentation and Reporting (13%) and Behavior Assessment (11%). Start with acquisition and reduction procedures and the definitions behind them, then practise data collection and graphing, and finish with ethics and documentation scenarios under a 90-minute timer.
What's changing (2026)
The BACB periodically updates the RBT Test Content Outline, application fees and handbook. This guide follows the 3rd edition outline and the 2026 fees; confirm the current versions at bacb.com before you apply.
