PTCE Pharmacy Technician Pass Rate, Format & Study Guide
A real reference for anyone preparing for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination (PTCE) — Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam — pass rate, retake policy, how it's scored, and a practical study timeline. This is independent reference content, not a sales page: everything below is sourced from PTCE Pharmacy Technician's own certifying body.
What the PTCE Pharmacy Technician exam is
The PTCE has 90 multiple-choice questions, of which 80 are scored and 10 are unscored and not identified, in a 1 hour and 50 minute exam (PTCB). The passing scaled score is 1,400 on a possible range of 1,000 to 1,600; you see an unofficial result on screen and the official result follows within about three weeks. The content outline has four areas: Medications 35 percent, Federal Requirements 18.75 percent, Patient Safety and Quality Assurance 23.75 percent, and Order Entry and Processing 22.5 percent (PTCE Content Outline v1.4, effective January 6, 2026).
Why it matters
PTCB's CPhT is a nationally recognized pharmacy technician credential, and many employers and state boards of pharmacy ask for it or accept it.
Who this exam is for
Pharmacy technician students and trainees, working technicians pursuing certification, and candidates retaking the exam.
Pass rate
The certifying body does not publicly publish an official pass rate for this exam. Be wary of third-party sites citing a specific number here — treat any pass-rate claim you see elsewhere for this exam as unverified.
If you don't pass — retake policy
The PTCB page we read did not state the retake policy and points to its Help Center; secondary sources report a 60-day wait after the first and second failed attempts and six months afterward, so confirm the current rule with PTCB before you plan a retake.
How it's scored
The passing scaled score for the PTCE is 1,400, on a possible score range of 1,000 to 1,600. Format: 90 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 50 minutes, of which 80 are scored. No official pass rate is available for this exam, so none is quoted here.

Eligibility requirements, in full

You must also reside in the United States or its territories, fully disclose criminal history and State Board of Pharmacy actions, and comply with PTCB certification policies.
What it actually costs
$129 to apply for CPhT certification and take the PTCE (PTCB). Study materials, training programs and state registration fees are separate.
