Free NC Electrical Contractor Exam (Unlimited) Flashcards

Grounding limits the voltage on a system that can be caused by lightning, line surges or accidental contact with higher voltage lines, and it stabilizes the voltage to earth during normal operation. Without a connection to earth, a surge or an unintended contact could raise the whole system to a hazardous potential relative to the ground that people stand on.
