National Nail Technology Theory Exam Pass Rate, Format & Study Guide

A real reference for anyone preparing for the National Nail Technology Theory Examination — National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC) exam — pass rate, retake policy, how it's scored, and a practical study timeline. This is independent reference content, not a sales page: everything below is sourced from National Nail Technology Theory Exam's own certifying body.

What the National Nail Technology Theory Exam exam is

The National Nail Technology Theory Examination is developed by the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC) and used by state cosmetology boards as the written part of nail technician licensure. It tests the knowledge a nail technician needs to work safely and competently: infection control and safety, anatomy and physiology, the chemistry of nail products, and the procedures for manicures, pedicures and nail enhancements.

Why it matters

Nail services involve close contact, sharp tools and chemical products, so states license nail technicians to protect the public from infection and chemical injury. The theory exam is the standardised check that a candidate understands the science and procedures behind safe practice, and passing it, together with the practical exam in most states, is the route to a licence and to working in salons and spas.

Who this exam is for

The exam is aimed at nail technology students and graduates of state-approved programs, and at candidates with out-of-state training who need to meet their state's testing requirement. Training hours and application steps vary by state, so check your state board first.

Pass rate

The certifying body does not publicly publish an official pass rate for this exam. Be wary of third-party sites citing a specific number here — treat any pass-rate claim you see elsewhere for this exam as unverified.

If you don't pass — retake policy

Retake rules are set by your state board and its testing vendor, not by NIC. In Virginia's PSI-administered system, for example, you cannot reschedule on the same day you tested, but you can retest as soon as the next available slot, you pay the $86 theory fee again each time, and you may retest an unlimited number of times during the one-year eligibility period; after that you must submit a new application and fee and retake the entire examination, including any parts you had already passed.

How it's scored

Virginia's PSI bulletin states that the minimum score required to pass both the NIC theory and practical examination is 75, and that candidates receive a PASS or FAIL score report when they finish. NIC's bulletin states the theory exam contains 110 items, of which 100 are weighted and contribute to your final score; the other 10 are unscored. NIC does not publish a pass rate in its bulletin, so none is quoted here.

Format at a glance

Format: Computer-based theory exam · 110 four-option multiple-choice items (100 weighted + 10 unscored) · 90 minutes · most states also require a separate practical exam · pass at 75
Real exam cost: Set by the state and its testing vendor — for example $86 per theory attempt in Virginia (PSI)

NIC's bulletin states the theory exam contains 110 items, of which 100 are weighted and contribute to the final score, with 90 minutes allowed. Each question has four answer options with one correct answer. States may add their own law questions: Virginia includes 10 Virginia questions in its theory exam. Candidates may not bring phones, watches, notes, bags or other items into the exam room.

What each domain actually tests

NIC's outline has nine content areas: Infection Control and Safety Practices (15%); Anatomy and Physiology (15%); Chemistry of Nail Products (10%); Client Consultation and Documentation (5%); Nail Service Tools (8%); Nail Service Preparation (5%); Manicure and Pedicure Services (18%), including massage movements; Application, Maintenance and Removal Procedures for Nail Enhancement Services (20%); and Post-Service Procedures (4%).

Eligibility requirements, in full

Eligibility is set by each state board. Virginia, for example, requires completion of an approved nail technician program or 150 hours of substantially equivalent training, an application through its testing vendor PSI, and passing both the NIC theory and practical examinations within one year of the first exam. Other states set different hour requirements and routes, so confirm yours before you enrol or apply.

What it actually costs

Fees are set by the state and its testing vendor. Virginia's bulletin lists $86 for the theory examination and $86 for a theory retake (and the same for the practical), non-refundable and non-transferable, with the fee valid for one year from payment. Cancelling less than two days before your appointment forfeits the fee. Budget also for the standard references, Milady Standard Nail Technology and Pivot Point Fundamentals: Nails.

Keeping the credential — maintenance & recertification

Licence renewal, continuing education and fees are set by each state board, not by NIC. Check your state board's renewal period and requirements after you are licensed.

How to actually prepare

NIC's outline puts 40% of the exam on science (infection control and safety 15%, anatomy and physiology 15%, chemistry of nail products 10%) and the rest on procedures, led by nail enhancement application, maintenance and removal (20%) and manicure and pedicure services (18%). Start with infection control and safety, which is the most heavily tested science area, then work through the service procedures in the order a client visit runs, and finish with timed 90-minute practice. NIC's standard references are Milady Standard Nail Technology and Pivot Point Fundamentals: Nails. Remember that the practical exam is a separate, hands-on test in most states.

What's changing (2026)

NIC's bulletin used here is effective July 1, 2020, and NIC advises candidates to check nictesting.org or their testing provider for the most current bulletin before testing. States can change their hours, fees and testing vendors at any time.
