Free MLT (ASCP) Exam Flashcards

The donor is deferred because the minimum for female donors is 12.5 g/dL hemoglobin (hematocrit 38 percent), and male donors need at least 13.0 g/dL (hematocrit 39 percent), so a value of 12.2 g/dL falls below either threshold. The cutoff protects the donor from becoming anemic after losing about 500 mL of blood, which removes roughly 200 to 250 mg of iron that the body replaces slowly.
