Free ISA Certified Arborist Flashcards

From the tip back, a root has a protective root cap that eases passage through soil, an apical meristem where cells divide, an elongation zone where cells lengthen to push the tip forward, and a maturation zone bearing root hairs. Most water and mineral absorption occurs near the hairs, so damage to tips and fine roots hurts uptake quickly.
