IELTS General Training - Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking — British Council, IDP IELTS and Cambridge University Press & Assessment

Work, training and migration applications often ask for IELTS General Training. Its Reading uses everyday and workplace texts and its Writing asks for a letter and an essay, alongside Listening and Speaking. Results are bands from 0 to 9 with no pass mark; the organization asking for the score sets the requirement. SummitCert is a study aid with explained questions, flashcards and progress tracking, not a scorer of Writing or Speaking.

Real exam cost
The fee is set by each test center; for example, one U.S. operator lists $325 plus a $15 admin fee ($340 in total) from October 1, 2026, and other U.S. centers list $325 (center websites; confirm when you book)
Format

IELTS General Training has four parts: Listening (about 30 minutes, 4 parts of 10 questions), Reading (60 minutes, 3 sections, 40 questions), Writing (60 minutes: a letter of at least 150 words and an essay of at least 250 words) and Speaking (11 to 14 minutes) (ielts.org). Listening and Reading are marked one point per correct answer and converted to bands; Writing task 2 counts twice as much as task 1. This portal is a study aid: its 80-question practice set is objective and cannot mark Writing or Speaking. IELTS has no pass or fail. Each skill and the overall result are reported as band scores from 0 to 9 in whole or half bands, and each organization sets the band scores it requires. The fee is set by each test center, so it varies. An official U.S. test-center operator lists $325 plus a $15 non-refundable admin fee ($340 in total) from October 1, 2026, and other U.S. centers list $325. Confirm the price at your center. The content outline spreads questions across 12 areas; the largest are Writing Task 2: Discursive Essay (16.7%); Reading Section 1: Everyday Texts (8.3%); Reading Section 2: Workplace Texts (8.3%). The full list of areas and weights is on the portal exam page. There is no pass mark and no formal entry requirement on the official pages; the university, employer or immigration body that asks for IELTS decides which test version and band scores it needs.
