Free FS Surveying Exam Flashcards

The instrument measures slope distance with its EDM, a horizontal angle from the angle circle, and a zenith angle from the vertical circle. Those three values give a three-dimensional vector, because the zenith angle splits the slope distance into horizontal distance and height difference, and the horizontal angle orients it. Adding the instrument and target heights then yields the stake's northing, easting and elevation.
