FE Other Disciplines Exam Pass Rate, Format & Study Guide

A real reference for anyone preparing for the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Other Disciplines CBT Exam — NCEES exam — pass rate, retake policy, how it's scored, and a practical study timeline. This is independent reference content, not a sales page: everything below is sourced from FE Other Disciplines Exam's own certifying body.

What the FE Other Disciplines Exam exam is

NCEES lists the FE Other Disciplines exam as 110 questions with 5 hours 20 minutes of exam time inside a 6-hour appointment that also includes a tutorial and a scheduled break; the portal mock uses 110 questions and 320 minutes. The specifications effective July 2020 spread the questions over 14 knowledge areas: Mathematics 7.91 percent, Probability and Statistics 5.93, Chemistry 5.14, Instrumentation and Controls 3.95, Engineering Ethics and Societal Impacts 5.14, Safety, Health, and Environment 5.93, Engineering Economics 5.93, Statics 9.09, Dynamics 9.09, Strength of Materials 9.09, Materials 5.93, Fluid Mechanics 11.86, Basic Electrical Engineering 5.93 and Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer 9.08. The real exam includes alternative item types such as multiple correct options, drag and drop and fill in the blank, and gives you the NCEES FE Reference Handbook on screen; the portal uses four-option multiple choice and does not provide the handbook.

Why it matters

The FE exam is the first step toward engineering licensure in most U.S. jurisdictions, and the Other Disciplines version fits engineers whose field has no discipline-specific FE exam.

Who this exam is for

Engineering students and graduates preparing for the NCEES FE Other Disciplines exam.

Pass rate

The certifying body does not publicly publish an official pass rate for this exam. Be wary of third-party sites citing a specific number here — treat any pass-rate claim you see elsewhere for this exam as unverified.

If you don't pass — retake policy

NCEES allows one attempt per testing window and no more than three attempts in a 12-month period; confirm the current rule on ncees.org.

How it's scored

NCEES does not publish a passing score or a predetermined pass percentage; it converts the number of correct answers to a scaled score that adjusts for form difficulty. The mock shows a percent score only as a rough self-check. Format: 110 questions in 5 hours 20 minutes; the portal mock uses the same question count and time, with four-option multiple choice only. No official pass rate is available for this exam, so none is quoted here.

What each domain actually tests

The content outline spreads questions across 14 areas: Mathematics (7.9%); Probability and Statistics (5.9%); Chemistry (5.1%); Instrumentation and Controls (4.0%); Engineering Ethics and Societal Impacts (5.1%); Safety, Health, and Environment (5.9%); Engineering Economics (5.9%); Statics (9.1%); Dynamics (9.1%); Strength of Materials (9.1%); Materials (5.9%); Fluid Mechanics (11.9%); Basic Electrical Engineering (5.9%); Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer (9.1%).

Eligibility requirements, in full

Each state licensing board sets who may take the FE and when; many allow seniors in an accredited engineering program. Confirm your board’s rules before you register through your MyNCEES account.

What it actually costs

The NCEES exam fee is $225 for U.S. registrations; boards may add their own fees. Each new attempt needs its own registration and fee.

Keeping the credential — maintenance & recertification

Passing the FE leads to the engineer-in-training path; later licensure steps, experience and renewal are set by your state licensing board.

How to actually prepare

Start with the heaviest areas of the content outline: Fluid Mechanics (11.9%); Statics (9.1%); Dynamics (9.1%). Then work through the remaining areas, and finish with timed full-length practice runs of 110 questions in one sitting.

What's changing (2026)

This guide follows the NCEES FE Other Disciplines CBT specifications (effective July 2020 examinations) and the NCEES exam guide of May 2026; check ncees.org for changes before you register.
