Free FAA Private Pilot Test Flashcards

A private pilot may not act as pilot in command for compensation or hire. The only broad exception for carrying passengers is sharing the pro rata operating costs such as fuel, oil, airport fees and rental. Charging a flat fee above those costs would turn the flight into a commercial operation. The rule exists because compensation turns a flight into a commercial operation that requires a higher certificate and more oversight.
