-3 is an integer because it is a whole-number distance below zero, not a natural number. The number 0 is a whole number if the naturals start at 1. The fraction 7/2 is rational, a ratio of integers that is not itself an integer. The expression sqrt(9) simplifies to 3, so it is a natural number despite the radical sign. The number sqrt(5) is irrational because it cannot be written as a ratio of integers. Placement depends on defining properties after simplification, never on how the symbol looks.
