CET EKG Exam Pass Rate, Format & Study Guide

A real reference for anyone preparing for the Certified EKG Technician (CET) Exam — NHA exam — pass rate, retake policy, how it's scored, and a practical study timeline. This is independent reference content, not a sales page: everything below is sourced from CET EKG Exam's own certifying body.

What the CET EKG Exam exam is

The NHA test plan lists 100 scored questions plus 20 pretest questions, and the NHA CET page describes a two-hour exam taken at a school, at a PSI testing center or with live remote proctoring. NHA reports the CET as a scaled score from 200 to 500, and a scaled score of 390 is passing. The NHA test plan weights three areas: Safety, Compliance, and Coordinated Patient Care 32 percent, EKG Acquisition 44 percent and EKG Analysis and Interpretation 24 percent.

Why it matters

The CET is a widely used entry credential for EKG technicians in hospitals, clinics and cardiology offices.

Who this exam is for

EKG technician students, medical assistants and healthcare workers who perform or plan to perform EKGs.

Pass rate

The certifying body does not publicly publish an official pass rate for this exam. Be wary of third-party sites citing a specific number here — treat any pass-rate claim you see elsewhere for this exam as unverified.

If you don't pass — retake policy

The NHA candidate handbook describes a 30-day wait after a failed attempt, three attempts in total with 30 days between them, and a one-year wait after repeated failures; you re-register and pay the full price for each retake. Check the current handbook before you rebook.

How it's scored

NHA reports the CET as a scaled score from 200 to 500 and a scaled score of 390 passes. It does not publish a percent-correct cut, so the portal mock shows 70 percent only as a rough self-check. Format: 100 scored questions plus 20 pretest questions in two hours. No official pass rate is available for this exam, so none is quoted here.

What each domain actually tests

The content outline spreads questions across 3 areas: Safety, Compliance, and Coordinated Patient Care (32.0%); EKG Acquisition (44.0%); EKG Analysis and Interpretation (24.0%).

Eligibility requirements, in full

NHA lists two routes: a high school diploma or GED (or one scheduled within 18 months) plus an EKG technician training program completed in the last five years, or a diploma or GED plus supervised EKG work experience of one year in the last three years or two years in the last five. Both routes need evidence of at least ten EKGs on live individuals.

What it actually costs

The exam fee is set by NHA and is not stated on the CET page; each retake is a new registration at the full price.

Keeping the credential — maintenance & recertification

NHA states that certifications must be renewed every two years and that 10 continuing education credits are required in that period; confirm the current fee and rules on nhanow.com.

How to actually prepare

Start with the heaviest areas of the content outline: EKG Acquisition (44.0%); Safety, Compliance, and Coordinated Patient Care (32.0%); EKG Analysis and Interpretation (24.0%). Then work through the remaining areas, and finish with timed full-length practice runs of 100 questions in one sitting.

What's changing (2026)

NHA publishes its test plans from job analyses; the CET plan used here is the 2017 job analysis (PDF dated 2018-02-13), and NHA has announced updated study materials, so check nhanow.com for any newer test plan.
