Arizona Motorcycle Permit Pass Rate, Format & Study Guide

A real reference for anyone preparing for the Arizona Motorcycle Permit Written Knowledge Test — Arizona Department of Transportation, Motor Vehicle Division exam — pass rate, retake policy, how it's scored, and a practical study timeline. This is independent reference content, not a sales page: everything below is sourced from Arizona Motorcycle Permit's own certifying body.

What the Arizona Motorcycle Permit exam is

The Arizona motorcycle written test is based on the Arizona Motorcycle Operator Manual (99-0129, revised March 2026), and sample questions in the manual are four-option multiple choice. ADOT MVD does not publish the item format, number of questions, time limit or passing score for the test. This portal's practice set has 50 questions; its length and timing are our own design, not the MVD's.

Why it matters

Passing the written test is a step toward an Arizona motorcycle instruction permit and, later, a Class M license.

Who this exam is for

New riders in Arizona preparing for the written test, including teenagers starting with an instruction permit.

Pass rate

The certifying body does not publicly publish an official pass rate for this exam. Be wary of third-party sites citing a specific number here — treat any pass-rate claim you see elsewhere for this exam as unverified.

If you don't pass — retake policy

An ADOT driver license FAQ says that after a first failed written test you may retake it on the following business day and take it up to three times without paying another application fee; that FAQ is not specific to motorcycles, so confirm it for the Class M test.

How it's scored

ADOT MVD does not publish a passing score for the motorcycle written test, so this guide does not state one. The practice set here is a study tool, not a prediction of your result. Format: ADOT does not publish the test length or passing score; this portal's practice set has 50 multiple-choice questions. No official pass rate is available for this exam, so none is quoted here.

Eligibility requirements, in full

ADOT's motorcycle page lists age 16 for Class M, and an ADOT form says applicants under 18 must have held an Arizona instruction permit for at least six months and show either an MVD-approved education program or written parental certification of at least 30 hours of riding practice. A third-party site gives 15 years 6 months as the minimum age for a permit, which the official pages did not state.

What it actually costs

No fee is quoted: the ADOT pages did not list a test or permit fee.

Keeping the credential — maintenance & recertification

This guide does not cover permit validity or renewal; an ADOT form notes you must retake the written test when renewing an expired motorcycle permit.

How to actually prepare

Start with the heaviest areas of the content outline: SEE, Intersections and Increasing Conspicuity (15.0%); Crash Avoidance, Dangerous Surfaces and Mechanical Problems (15.0%); Basic Vehicle Control: Body Position, Shifting, Braking and Turning (13.0%). Then work through the remaining areas, and finish with timed full-length practice runs of 50 questions in one sitting.
