AZ-104 Azure Administrator Pass Rate, Format & Study Guide
A real reference for anyone preparing for the Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104) — Microsoft exam — pass rate, retake policy, how it's scored, and a practical study timeline. This is independent reference content, not a sales page: everything below is sourced from AZ-104 Azure Administrator's own certifying body.
Pass rate
The certifying body does not publicly publish an official pass rate for this exam. Be wary of third-party sites citing a specific number here — treat any pass-rate claim you see elsewhere for this exam as unverified.
If you don't pass — retake policy
Microsoft requires a 24-hour wait after a failed first attempt, then a 14-day wait between every subsequent attempt, up to a maximum of 5 attempts within any 12-month period counted from your very first attempt. After a 5th failure you're locked out of that exam for a full 12 months from your original attempt date. Waivers of the waiting period are only granted for a documented connectivity/equipment failure during the exam itself.
How it's scored
Microsoft scores AZ-104 on a scaled 1-1000 range, with 700 required to pass. Microsoft does not publish the raw percentage of correct answers that corresponds to 700, or the exact weighting across question types (multiple-choice, drag-and-drop, case studies) — only the scaled pass/fail outcome and a skill-area performance breakdown are reported to candidates.
Format at a glance

How to actually prepare
The exam runs 100 minutes and covers roughly 40-60 questions spanning identity/governance, storage, compute, networking, and monitoring — Microsoft's own official study guide (linked from the certification page) is the authoritative topic breakdown, since exact domain-weighting percentages aren't published as fixed numbers. Candidates with 6+ months of hands-on Azure administration experience commonly prepare in 4-6 weeks; those newer to Azure or coming from an on-prem admin background often need 2-3 months to get comfortable with the portal, PowerShell, and CLI workflows the exam tests directly through scenario-based questions.
