ASE G1 Test Pass Rate, Format & Study Guide

A real reference for anyone preparing for the ASE G1 Automobile Maintenance and Light Repair Certification Test — ASE exam — pass rate, retake policy, how it's scored, and a practical study timeline. This is independent reference content, not a sales page: everything below is sourced from ASE G1 Test's own certifying body.

What the ASE G1 Test exam is

The G1 certification test has 55 scored questions and 10 unscored research questions that are not identified, so answer every question; you have 90 minutes (ASE G1 test page). ASE's study guide groups the scored questions into seven areas: Engine Systems 9, Automatic Transmission/Transaxle 4, Manual Drive Train and Axles 6, Suspension and Steering 13, Brakes 11, Electrical 8 and Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning 4 (ASE G1 Official Study Guide, 2026 edition). You can take the test in person at a Prometric test center or online with remote proctoring where eligible, and the G1 test is also offered in Spanish (ASE G1 test page).

Why it matters

ASE certification is a recognized way for automotive technicians to show that they have passed a test in a specific service area, and G1 covers the maintenance and light repair work of a general service technician.

Who this exam is for

Automotive students and working technicians who want ASE certification in maintenance and light repair.

Pass rate

The certifying body does not publicly publish an official pass rate for this exam. Be wary of third-party sites citing a specific number here — treat any pass-rate claim you see elsewhere for this exam as unverified.

If you don't pass — retake policy

The ASE G1 page does not state a waiting period for retaking a test. Check ASE's current retest rules before you rebook, and note that a purchased test expires if you do not schedule it within the window ASE sets.

How it's scored

ASE does not publish a passing score for the G1 test, so the portal mock shows 70 percent only as a self-check target. Your official result comes from ASE. Format: 55 scored multiple-choice questions plus 10 unscored research questions in 90 minutes. No official pass rate is available for this exam, so none is quoted here.
